Our focus is high quality beef production; specifically grass-fed beef – the way beef used to be!
The herd that we are developing has a mixture of commercial and registered Angus cattle. We are specifically focusing on building a registered WYE Angus herd. Our herd sire is from the University of Maryland’s WYE Angus program. We have a very modern corral and cattle handling facility and we have never used antibiotics or hormones. Our cattle range freely to graze over 100 acres. We do supplement our cattle with millet and grass hay during the winter months and we use a vitamin-mineral supplement.
Our farming techniques include pasture management using rotational grazing. We restore the pastures with the use of limestone, clover and winter annuals to replenish nutrients into the soil.
About Our Cattle
Wye Angus cattle have been developed since 1937 and are continuing to flourish at WYE Plantation and on farms throughout the United States. They originate from the Aberdeen Angus of Scotland and were imported by Arthur Houghton in the 1930’s to his farm in Maryland. Many people refer to this herd as the original Angus breed. The herd from Mr. Houghton and the farm was gifted to the University of Maryland in 1978 where research has continued to guide the development and selection of the best Angus genetics. If you are looking for cattle that are known for longevity, fertility and ease of management on grass, this breed will not disappoint.
I was introduced to the Wye Angus breed by David Freeman of Marshall in 2004. I bought my first registered Angus bull from him to produce a cattle herd that thrives on grass. In fifteen years as a producer of grass-fed beef; I have not been disappointed. The males and females are docile and easy keepers. The females are fertile with great mothering abilities. Calves wean at 7 months at 550-650 lbs. The males have consistently been through at breeding and working their cow herd. We saw great improvements in our commercial herd and decided to raise 100 percent Wye seedstock so that others could enjoy the same benefits that we have experienced on our farm.
We have been developing our seedstock since 2014 and currently sell herd sires, open heifers, bred heifers, cow/calf pairs and steers. We raise steers for our grass-fed beef business and currently sell to customers in North Carolina, Georgia, and Tennessee.
